Pheonix top Tigers with late layup

Raven Bankston scored 22 points in her final game at SECU arena.

It was an especially heartbreaking loss on Senior Day for the Towson Tigers women’s basketball team on Sunday. With only four seconds remaining, Shay Burnett scored the game-winning layup for the Elon Phoenix to sink the Tigers 67-65.

Senior guard Raven Bankston scored 22 points in her final game at SECU Arena while sophomore Sianni Martin scored 15 points and classmate Maia Lee had 10 points in 15 minutes on 5-for-6 shooting. But their efforts just barely weren’t enough for the Tigers.

The game was remarkably competitive and featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes.

Elon was able to get out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, but a jumper by Martin and successful three-point play by Daijha Thomas got the Tigers within one point just a minute later. Elon was still able to keep ahead with six points in a row down the stretch of the first quarter, but before Lee hit a layup at the quarter’s end.

Elon pushed ahead by nine points 54 seconds into the second quarter. They had another nine-point lead with 4:51 left in the second quarter. But Towson then held the Phoenix without a field goal for the rest of the half and rallied back to tie the game at 37-37 at the break.

The Phoenix did end up scoring the first seven points of the second half, but Towson scored nine in a row to take a 46-44 lead with 5:59 left in the third quarter. Two and a half minutes later Towson completed a six-point run to get ahead by seven points at 54-47. Lee made two baskets in that stretch, including a fast-break layup off a steal by Thomas.

Elon responded with seven points in a row to tie the game at 54-54 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw a bevy of short exchanges with neither team able to get ahead by more than two points. Bankston completed a three-point play to put the Tigers ahead by one point with 2:27 left in the game, but the Phoenix scored the final three points, including Burnett’s game-winner to close out the contest to steal the win.

Towson will wrap up their regular season on the road at Delaware on Wednesday before participating in the CAA tournament beginning next week.

Editor in Chief
You could say Corey was born to become a sports journalist. His father won a national championship coaching college soccer. His mother is a baseball fanatic who hasn't missed seeing an Orioles game since 1983 (literally, sometimes it's annoying). His great uncle was a big-time boxing promoter and his maternal grandfather was once a department head at the Baltimore Sun. Basically, sports and journalism run through his blood. He played just about every little league sports there was when he was a kid and was a multi-sport athlete in high school; even playing in the first-ever high school sanction Rugby game in the country. Eventually he retired from sports as an undefeated Maryland state Rugby champion as a high school senior. Perhaps lack of athletic talent has more to do with the retirement, but he will tell you that it more had to do with a great desire to jump right into media. Upon his graduation from University of Maryland, Baltimore County as a triple communications major, Corey started the So Much Sports network and has continued to grow his websites and continues to work to make them premier sports media outlets.
