Schwartz earns 1,000th kill in sweep of Gallaudet

By: Dayne Turner

Annika Schwartz only needed eight kills to reach the 1,000 kill plateau in her career. On Thursday night she had 15 to lead the Mustangs in a sweep of the Gallaudet Bison, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19.

“It’s really great [to reach 1,000 kills], but it’s definitely 100-percent a team effort, couldn’t of done it without my teammates,” Schwartz said.

Against the Bison, Schwartz hit .481 on 27 attempts on the evening. As a team the Mustangs out-hit Gallaudet .307 to .117 to earn their fourth-straight victory to get their record up to 13-7.

Stevenson took an early 9-5 lead before a Bison timeout. Following the timeout Gallaudet got no closer than four points as a block by Chelsea Ireland and Kristen Brooks closed out the set.

In the second set Schwartz’s 1,000th kill gave Stevenson a 22-17 lead. As the Bisons kept it close by trailing by only two, Schwartz’s tenth kill of the night gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

Stevenson trailed early in the third however bounced back to take a 21-15 lead and the match was soon ended by a kill from Schwartz.

“Annika’s one of those players at the end of the match she wants the ball, doesn’t mean she is always going to come through but she sure does a lot” Mustangs head coach Dave Trumbo said.

Stevenson returns the action and looks to keep their winning streak alive in a tournament this Saturday as they take on No. 13 Eastern at 10 a.m. and Desales at 4 p.m. in Owings Mills.
