Towson WLAX

The Tigers closed out their regular season with victory over the University of Connecticut. It was their seventh win in eight games as a big second half gave Towson the 13-10 win.

Towson was down early, as one minute into the game, Alexandra Crofts scored for UConn. However, it wouldn’t last long. After that, Towson went on a run of their own, scoring back to back goals, with Samantha Brookhart assisting Kaitlyn Montalbano, and Emily Gillingham scoring on her own. Towson would make it three in a row, this time with Gillingham assisting Alyssa Ferro. Jacqueline Jordan stopped the run for UConn with an unassisted goal. After that, Natalie Sulmonte would score her first goal of the game for the Tigers.

With 15:03 left in the first half, UConn went on a huge run, scoring four in a row, to take a 6-4 lead. The run included two goals, and an assist for Katherine Finkelston. It also featured two assists by Alyson Fazio, and a goal from Ally Tilley. Montalbano’s second goal of the game stopped the bleeding for the Tigers. Gillingham helped with the assist. The goal brought them within one. Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the half, going into halftime with the score 6-5.

The second half was where things turned around for the Tigers.

“We just reset, and refocused at halftime,” Towson head coach Sonia LaMonica said. “We weren’t satisfied with our performance up to that point. A lot of errors. We were a little too jittery, forcing a lot of things offensively, so once we just refocused, reminded our group to play disciplined, be patient, things will start going our way. We just got into that rhythm in the second half.”

20 seconds into the second half, Sulmonte scored her second goal of the game. After an UConn goal by Kelsey Catalano, Sulmonte scored for the third time. It would be her third hat trick of the season, all in the last four games.

Following this, Jenna Kerr scored back to back goals for the Tigers, with assists from Brookhart and Montalbano. After being held scoreless for almost 10 minutes, Catalano scored again for UConn. Towson would then score four in a row. With 14:22 left in regulation Sulmonte got her career high, fourth point of the game with an assist to Ferro. Montalbano scored her third and fourth goals back to back, both unassisted, giving Towson a 12-8 lead, before Gillingham tacked on one more. Connecticut scored twice in the final two minutes, bringing the score a bit closer.
The Tigers will be back in action, on the road Friday May 6, when the CAA Tournament kicks off at Drexel. The Tigers, who are the number two seed in the tournament will take on No. 3 Elon at 3:30 p.m.
