Matt Elam will suit up for his first regular season game since 2014.

Matt Elam, a former first round pick in 2013, has just been activated off injured reserve for the Ravens. Elam will add safety depth after the season ending injury to Kendrick Lewis, and the struggles of backup Marqueston Huff, and he provides better backfield value than Anthony Levine. The team released defensive back Robertson Daniel in order to make room on the active roster for Elam.

After a promising rookie season in 2013, in which he started 15 games and registered 53 tackles and an interception, Elam had a major drop-off in production the following year, starting just 11 games and losing his job mid-season to Will Hill III. Elam had a great college career at Florida, producing at a high level in his time there, but he was not able to translate his skills to the pro level.

While Elam certainly has the football background, some of his intangibles were the main reasons for his struggles. Despite being on the smaller side for a safety at only 5-foot-10, Elam has a very bad habit of going for the big blowup hit, which often led to missed tackles. Going for the big hit works in college, but NFL receivers and running backs do not go down so easily, which is why wrapping up the ball-carrier is so vital.

Elam also found himself lost in times in the defense, and his awareness never really became a strength for him. He made a lot of silly mental mistakes, and as a result, he lost his job.

Despite all of those issues, Elam could still salvage his career if he is able to fix some of his fundamentals. All of these weaknesses of his are mental, and he has had a year and a half to learn all of this stuff since his last appearance in 2014. With the Ravens’ safety situation in crisis mode, this is the perfect time for him to renew any sort of value he once had, because after this season, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He has the next nine games to turn that into any sort of offseason contract he can find. While this is not going to be game-changer for the team, it could definitely work if Elam can outplay the other reserves at safety.
