Darius Victor proves he can take over as lead running back

Nobody is ever going to replace Terrance West, who is widely regarded as the greatest FCS running back in history. In three years West rushed for 4,854 yards and 84 touchdowns. As a junior he rushed for 2,509 yards and 41 touchdowns, and led the Tigers to the FCS Championship game. Without him the magic would not have happened.

And don’t be confused about it either, West was not some random kid who came out of nowhere and happened to blow up at Towson, he was a highly-recruited running back out of Fork Union Military Academy prep school being sought after by Clemson, Maryland and other BCS schools. Unfortunatley low SAT scores prevented him from qualifying for either and he decided to join Rob Ambrose at Towson. All he did after was set records every year. He set the FCS single season freshman touchdown record with 29 in 2011 and set the single season rushing touchdown and yard records in 2013.

Then he went on to become a third round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, which was great but it definitely breaks his fans hearts it had to be out hometown Ravens division rivals that got him. It is only a matter of time before his talent takes off in the NFL but for Towson it left a huge burden and void at running back. It won’t be completely filled but putting somebody effective back there is the requirement.

Having a scrambling quarterback like Connor Frazier helps the running game but luckily for Towson, sophomore Darius Victor is an incredibly talented and proven guy back there.

In 2013 Victor was the CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year and rushed 98 times for 629 yards and seven touchdown. Tn the team’s season opener against Central Connecticut State Victor rushed the ball 19 times for 105 yards and a score, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.

It is tough to put on a sophomore but Victor is going to be the key to Towson’s success this season and it is probably a safe bet to say he can do it. Towson has proven that their running game and running scheme will lead to a ton of success for the Tigers as long as they have a talented back leading the way and Victor in a much more expanded role than he had last season proved he can lead the way.

Editor in Chief
You could say Corey was born to become a sports journalist. His father won a national championship coaching college soccer. His mother is a baseball fanatic who hasn't missed seeing an Orioles game since 1983 (literally, sometimes it's annoying). His great uncle was a big-time boxing promoter and his maternal grandfather was once a department head at the Baltimore Sun. Basically, sports and journalism run through his blood. He played just about every little league sports there was when he was a kid and was a multi-sport athlete in high school; even playing in the first-ever high school sanction Rugby game in the country. Eventually he retired from sports as an undefeated Maryland state Rugby champion as a high school senior. Perhaps lack of athletic talent has more to do with the retirement, but he will tell you that it more had to do with a great desire to jump right into media. Upon his graduation from University of Maryland, Baltimore County as a triple communications major, Corey started the So Much Sports network and has continued to grow his websites and continues to work to make them premier sports media outlets.
